2 Things To Talk To Your Roofer About

Nora Mcdonalid

When you are thinking about getting a new roof, you need to consider several things before you make your final decision as to what kind of roofing material you want to put on your roof. Some things are fairly obvious, like lifespan and overall cost, but there are some things that you might not necessarily consider at first.

Fire Resistance

One of the things that you may need to consider is how fire-resistant the roof is. This is especially true if you live somewhere that is prone to wildfires. If your roofing material resists sparks, coals, and ashes, it can be harder for the wildfire to get ahold of your house. In that case, you might want to look at things like metal roofs, slates, or tiles. None of those things are flammable, so they can stand up to that wildfire for a while. It's important to remember that there is nothing that is completely fireproof, there are varying rates of fire resistance.

Pest Resistant

Pest resistance can mean that the roofing material stands up well to insects like carpenter ants or termites or any other destructive insects that might get on your roof and eat it. It also means that it will stand up to things like squirrels who are going to want to jump up on your roof and try to get into your attic. When squirrels, bats, or raccoons get into your attic, they don't want to get out, and they will do a lot of damage to your attic. Finding a roofing material that can help take keep them from getting into your attic will be a good start. Things like concrete composite shingles can be a good idea because the pest animals can't chew through them and into your attic. Things like cedar or douglas fir shakes are good for fighting insects because they both have a high resistance to insects. When they are new, they may also help to prevent animals from getting in. If the shakes are on your roof for a long time without proper maintenance, then they can become a problem, but making sure that you have a roofer maintain your shakes will help keep animals from taking advantage of them.

When you are looking for a new roof, you are going to have to consider so many things. Some things may be obvious, but not all the things that you should think about. If you are unsure of all the things that you should think about, find a professional roofing contractor and see what they can suggest to you.
