Areas To Pay Close Attention To On Your Roof

Nora Mcdonalid

The more you know about your home's roof, the less risk of being caught off guard by a roofing emergency. This guide on residential roofing can be a big help to you. It will go over some of the most vulnerable areas of the roof, so you know which areas to pay the most attention to. If you are noticing signs of damage, excessive wear, or other things that you are worried about, call a roofing contractor to address the issues.

Valleys – The valleys of your roof are the areas where two slopes of the roof meet at their lower positions. Your roof likely has several valleys. You are going to want to look for bunches of leaves and other debris that can end up collecting in the roof's valleys. Once this debris has been removed, make sure it doesn't look like there is any damage to that area. Also, watch for leaks, because you may start experiencing a leak once the debris is cleared out. If so, the roofing contractor can fix the leak.

Eaves and soffits – The eaves are located along the lower edges of your roof that hangs over the exterior walls of your home. The soffits are located along the undersides of the eaves. The eaves and the soffits often end up with damages for a number of reasons. For one thing, their location makes them easy targets for tree branches during high winds. Also, they are susceptible to water damage that can be caused by things like ice dams, ripped shingles, flashing issues, and even problematic gutters. When water is allowed to seep in, then it can cause rotting sooner than you might think. The eaves are also often targeted by birds looking for places to nest. If you see anything that doesn't look right with the eaves and soffit areas, have the roofer come take a look.

Flashing – Flashing on a roof are the metal sheets that are used to help prevent water from going where it shouldn't and causing a lot of problems. The flashing can be found in areas like the areas around vents, pipes, the chimney, and any other areas where something protrudes from the roof. If you see problematic areas where the flashing is, then the problems need to be checked thoroughly right away. If any repairs are needed, then they should be done promptly as well.
